I have time now, but any physical start won't be 'til the P-40 is finished sometime after NATS. I pulled the kit from the stash several months ago, with plans to start it after the P-40. I purchased the conversion kit from B&B Resin back when Tim first released it. I've also picked up various AM sets but I'm not sure which ones I'll use. I had also picked up this resin base and I'm thinking about using it in the project. In spare moments, I've started painting the base.

This was a thread on the old site before the crash. So, I bought this shirt at the EAA museum in 2024, right before NATS in Madison, WI. And I've been wearing it to shows but I don't have a P-40 on the shelf. So when Sprue had a sale a while back, I bought the Great Wall Hobbies kit. Since the shirt has && on it, I've been planning on building 77. Some of the AM that I've bought for it. And some of the progress on it. Cockpit area mostly. Ready to close up the fuselage. Added

I've been working on this build now for a couple of weeks and have decided it's about time to post a photo or two. The kit is a "J" but I'm going to mark it up as a "H". The main visible difference in the "J" and the "H" is the bombardier under nose glazing. I had to stick with the kit "J" piece since, as far as I've been able to determine, there is no "H" style nose piece available.

AJS 7R, 350cc single cylinder race bike from around 1959. So here we have a Protar model motorcycle. Founded in 1963 in Bologna by Tarquinio Provini, a famous motorcycle Grand Prix racer , they produced a wide range of motorcycle kits of the era and later branching into GP cars. I have been widely absent for a while for different reasons, one very obviously it is summertime, with lots of swimming, mountainbiking and doing things around the house, etc. Another reason is redecorating my workspace, selling unused woodworking machines and add desparately needed display shelves to my cave. Not so obvious, but to my own mystification, the forum situation with LSM and MSW crashed with all data and seemingly many members lost and to add to that the forming of Dry Dock Modeler

I've kinda given up on using the Eduard engine in the model. That front cowl ring just isn't going to match up. Since I'm working toward some sort of a diorama, perhaps, I can use it there, just not in the aircraft.
The P-40 is just about finished, so I guess I'll get back to this. The new instrument panel model is about ready to print, so I guess I need to work on the cockpit to make sure the new IP fits.
Of course, there are the other models that have been started which I need to work toward finishing. And then there's the draw of the new Z-M Ki-100 and that P-40N that was mentioned a while back that was instigated by the P-47 book that I had purchased. As mentioned in that thread, that $1.50 used book has cost me ~$150 so far. 🤣

Final Stretch at Full Throttle
Since applying the decals and dealing with the glossy carrier film, I came to the conclusion that the film can actually be removed, in a similar way to Eduard decals.
However, I did not remove all of it. Due to their very small size, I decided not to touch the service markings and warning stencils in order to avoid damaging them.

Concerned that this glossy layer might cause a silvering effect, I applied another coat of gloss varnish to seal those decals. I was pleasantly surprised by the final result, with no sign of silvering and the decals blending perfectly into the paintwork.

With this stage completed, I moved on to the weathering process. From the outset, my intention was to concentrate the weathering around the engine areas, while keeping the rest of the airframe relatively well maintained.
The weathering was carried out using oil paints (black, brown and grey), applied section by section and allowing the appropriate drying time between applications. I also used a highly diluted mixture with Lamp Black to darken selected panels, creating subtle points of visual interest across the wings.
Still not entirely satisfied, I decided to use AK gouache pencils, applying them very selectively and carefully blending them on the fuselage, as well as on certain areas of the wings and national insignia, helping to integrate the latter more naturally into the finished model.
What remains is the removal and correction of the masking on the transparent parts, the attachment of a few small details, navigation lights and antennas before I can officially call the model finished!
For now, here is its current state of the model, already with the main gear attached:

Thank you Paddy, you built a little beauty there. The 1000SP looks fantastic. The rear hinge issue is weird, 10mm off, wow, but your solution looks well thought and sturdy. I hear you about drilling and planning ahead, I´ve been there also, it´s part of the game with MFH kits. They have their shortcomings, but I´m addicted since I started my Cobra Coupe as my first MFH car. It was way over my head, but somehow I got it together. It had a similar issue with the bonnet, which I wasn´t able to close over the air intakes. Took me a lot of surgery, swearing and test fitting, until I got it halfway solved. I then built two F1 classics, which were a bit easier to assemble.
The tiny Abarth is tempting me since it came out, I like the look and if I build it, I may opt for pure red bodywork without sponsor decals, which shows the beauty of the body without distraction.

Its a nice kit but has an issue with the rear engine cover hinge. its just out by about 10mm

the bar at the bottom at the back is the mount for the hinges on the rear cover above. A/ its not strong enough to pivot the weight of the cover being white metal and B/ its its about 10mm to low so you need to remake the rear chassis hinge point, i obviously used brass and soldered it for strength. I have sleeved it on to the original with a couple of alloy sleeves and given it a10mm lift but you need to fit the rear cover and work it out yourself.

Other than that i found it a good fun kit and resin panels fit exceptionally well, it was my first MFH car although i have now built 2 as i did the matra simca on here a while back which wasn't so successful. As you know the MFH stuff is a whole different ball game so i am learning from scratch about drilling, reading miles ahead on the instructions, test fit and test fit again a dozen times. Never allow anything to be even a couple of degrees out thinking you will sort it later as the smallest error just multiplies a 100x as you go further 😉

Give it a go, its one of the cheaper options but is none the less a very nice model

You are also browsing the site regular it seems. All my MFH builds are in the gallery and yes, I feel honoured among so many gifted modelers.
BTW: I´m pondering, if I really want to buy the still available Abarth 1000SP LM. I like the little beast, specially the rear with all the ducts and fairings. I reckon you built one Paddy, what are your thoughts about the kit. Are there serious downsides, I mean more than the MFH usual obstacles?
